July is here! Temperatures have warmed up in Lubbock, vacations are starting, summer is in full swing!
This also means we are halfway through the year already! It’s hard to believe, right?! Now is the perfect time to do a little reflection- check in and see where you’re at with those goals you set in January.
Maybe you’re plugging away, crushing those goals, and you couldn’t be happier with your progress. That’s awesome! This would be a great time to set a couple of new goals.
However, if you’re like most of us, you may not be anywhere close to those goals you had 6 months ago. Maybe you started the year off great, but as the weeks went by you fell back into old habits. Maybe you were cruising right along and then something happened in your life and everything came to a screeching halt, a derailment. You had a great plan, but then life happened, and you just haven’t been able to get back on track.
So, what was your goal?
Did you want to lose weight? 5 pounds, 10, maybe even 50 pounds?
Did you want to improve strength or muscle tone?
Did you have a specific skill you really wanted to learn- perhaps a pull-up or muscle up?
Maybe you wanted a bodyweight snatch or a 500lb deadlift.
Whatever it was, ask yourself these 2 questions- 1) Is this still my goal, 2) Am I making progress toward it?
If the answer to the first question is no, that’s perfectly ok! Our goals change throughout our life. Now is a great time to decide what your current goal is.
If the answer to the first question is yes, but the answer to the second question is no or not much, then it’s time to get after it!
This is the time to refocus. This is the time to recommit. This is the time to buckle down and make it happen. What excuses have you been making? What hurdles do you need to remove or find a way around? What is your plan???
Having a goal without a plan is all but pointless. Things generally don’t just “happen”, especially if it’s something that you want (because if it happened without any effort, you would already have it…). You need to make a plan. You need to consider potential roadblocks and hurdles (because they will be there), and you need to know exactly what to do when you come up to one.
If your goal involves losing weight- what are you doing to improve your nutrition? Trying to lose weight without addressing nutrition is one of the biggest mistakes we see.
If your goal was to improve strength or tone up- nutrition and exercise will be important here. You must eat enough (but not too much…) to build muscle, and you need to eat the right types of food. You also may need some individual guidance on training for your specific strength goals.
If it’s a particular skill you really want to learn, individual guidance (via personal training sessions) is probably the number one place to start. But it may be necessary, or at least helpful to improve your body composition as well. Less fat + more muscle= easier execution of gymnastics.
Maybe its accountability you need. Maybe you start each Sunday with a plan to make it to 3 classes this week. That’s a great goal! Specific, measurable, attainable. But what if that’s been your goal for the past 26 weeks and you failed 20 out of the 26 times? It’s time to change something. You may need to commit to going to the 5:30am class, No. Matter. What. You may need to evaluate your weekly schedule and see if there’s something that gets more time than it should, something that removing from your routine would allow you to focus on your health. There may be compromises. But our health should not be one of those compromises.
Speaking of accountability- do you know which group of people has the highest “show” rate? All of my one-on-one clients. Whether it’s for On Ramp, Personal Training, or Nutrition, these people show up. It could be the appointment that is set. It could be that it is very obvious when they don’t show. It could be that it requires canceling the appointment versus just not showing up if they aren’t “feeling it”. It could be that they are paying more so they take it more seriously. It could be all of these things. Bottom line is, it works. They show up. They see progress. They reach their goals. They set new ones.

Today, write out your goals and obstacles. Then come up with a plan. If that plan needs to include nutrition coaching or personal training, then you better email, text, call, or find me in person this week to get that scheduled.

What’s one thing you can do today that will bring you closer to your goal? It’s time to take action. It’s time to make progress. It’s time to stop making excuses. You are in the driver’s seat, and you can do it!
