Nutrition and Vacation- They Can Go Together!

By Erika B

With the summer season now in full swing, here are 5 tips to help you stay on track with your nutrition goals.

  1. Pack some healthy snacks.

If driving to your vacation spot, having some healthy snacks already packed away will help you when you make those truck stop potty breaks. Knowing you already have beef jerky, fruit, nut butters or your homemade granola packed away will not only save you some dollars but it will keep your hunger at bay, so when you make those stops, you won’t be so quick to gorge on chips, candy or convenience store hot dogs. If traveling by other means, try to pack goodies that will keep well in your purse or carry-on luggage.

  1. Do your homework.

Consider your location, and see what they may have to offer, as far as restaurants or a fitness center. If you are renting a home/Airbnb, do they offer a full kitchen? If so, make one of your first stops the grocery store. Try stocking up on healthy food/snacks to eat at least the majority of your day. Being on vacation, we are usually going to want to splurge on yummy food and the local cuisine, which is fine, but it doesn’t have to be every meal of every day that you are on vacation.

  1. Stay active.

Instead of using Uber/lyft or any other means of public transportation, if possible consider walking to get your steps in or biking to enjoy all the touristy stuff. Check to see if any of the local gyms accept drop-ins, check out “yoga in the park or on the beach”. Maybe your hotel has a fitness center to utilize or just go to a local park and get some bodyweight exercises in. 100 burpees can be done in the privacy of your hotel room. Just saying!

  1. Plan ahead.

If you know you’re meeting friends/family on a particular night at a restaurant that you hear has “to die for” pizza, plan the rest of your meals for that day around that meal. Have a healthy breakfast and lunch, then splurge on that cheesy, meaty pizza. If going to a not so familiar restaurant, try googling the restaurant ahead of time to view the menu, see what they have to offer, then make your choice from there.

  1. Get plenty of sleep.

I know, I know, you’re vacationing…who has time to sleep when there’s so much to be seen in a short time. However, getting enough sleep (7-8 hours at least) helps to keep stress levels down. Traveling, even if you’re having a great time, can still put stress on your body. Being under stress brings down your immune system, as well. Who wants to be sick on vacation? That’s not going to be fun. Easy fix…SLEEP! It will also help you to feel energized and happy so you can be all touristy and stuff.

These are just a few of many different ways to help you maintain your nutrition goals while also enjoying life. Happy vacationing, Paladins!!!
