This week’s featured member is Sarah Burleson! Here’s a little bit about her😃
Q: What brought you to CrossFit Paladin in the first place?
A: My husband, Brandon, had been doing CrossFit for over a year before I started. I have always been active: high school sports, intramurals in college, pick up basketball games in college, group workout classes, and even city league sports teams.
After college, I started working out at a local gym. I worked out some alone, but had most success in classes when I worked out in a group, with an instructor, versus alone.
I felt pretty satisfied with my workout routine, even though Brandon kept trying to get me into Paladin to give it a try. Finally, he was successful and got me into the gym! After a few trial visits, I was hooked! The workouts offered new challenges I had never had, and even brought the competitiveness I always enjoyed in sports. (Competition is optional! Everyone is here to get a good workout! ☺️)
Q: What was your first impression? How has it changed?
A: I have been with CrossFit Paladin officially since June of 2014. My first 3 trial visits included some things I was comfortable with and some things that were way out of my comfort zone!
My first visit ever included a movement way beyond my ability! PULL UPS! My coach instructed me to use a band to assist with my pull-ups. I remember thinking, “There is no way I will ever be able to do these without this band.” I would say within a year, I had built the strength to do unassisted pull-ups. It was a proud moment!
In my first few visits, I remember seeing how my husband interacted with all these awesome people! It really was a fun fitness community, just as he had described it to me. I remember initially being nervous to go to the gym without my husband but quickly became comfortable going on my own because I really enjoyed the people!
Q: What was one of your first “bright spots”?
A: I remember watching the ladies at the gym during my first year and thinking I will never RX any workouts. Fast forward to my first open in Feb./March 2015 and I was able to RX all workouts but 1. I remember being really proud of that!
A: THE. PEOPLE. — The evening class (Hey 5:30p.m!) is my social hour! I get to let the stresses of the day go and get in a good workout surrounded by people who support me and make me laugh!
I also love the variety of movements we are challenged with in CrossFit. After 6.5 years, I am still challenged with improving current skills and working on new ones.
Q: What do you enjoy most about CrossFit Paladin?
Q: Favorite CrossFit Movement:
A: Ohhh tough one…I’m going to go with thrusters or anything shoulder to overhead with a barbell.
Q: Least favorite CrossFit movement:
A: Pistol squats
Q: What is going to be your next bright spot (next big accomplishment you’re working toward)?
A: I would love to get better at gymnastics movements on the bar and rings.
Q: What is your favorite meal after a hard workout?
A: Stuffed beef sopapilla from Garcia’s! (Oh wait…was this supposed to be healthy?!)
Q: Tell us about your family:
A: Brandon and I have been married for 7 years! We have one fur-child, a 13 lb Doxie-Poo named Gage. ☺️
Q: What kind of job do you have?
A: I serve as the science coordinator for Frenship ISD. I celebrated 10 years with FISD in May of 2020!
Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: I love dabbling in home decor and bringing old furniture back to life! I have an entire closet filled with “other decorations” and crafting supplies! 😂
We also enjoy traveling and anything that gets us outdoors!
Thanks to Sarah for sharing a bit about herself! Both Sarah and her husband Brandon have been long-time members and we love to have them as part of the Paladin fam!
