This week’s member spotlight is on Keely Hamman!
Q: What brought you to CrossFit Paladin in the first place?
A: Many, MANY, moons ago, I came to Paladin with friends. We were all still in college as undergrads and wanted to ‘workout’ and kick that Freshman 15 (although we were sophomores and juniors). After a hiatus for graduate school, I was able to come back ‘home’ to Paladin and once again they welcomed me with open arms.
Q: What was your first impression? How has it changed?
A: I remember being intimidated, but that quickly vanished when I realized everyone excels with some movements and struggles with others. I generally thought how attentive, nice, and welcoming each person was. Each day I’m excited to workout at Paladin. Whether it’s the (way too early) morning class or afternoon classes, I look forward to the energy and camaraderie the members and coaches bring. Who says working out can’t be fun? I almost always leave feeling accomplished with my personal battery levels restored.
Q: What was one of your first “bright spots”?
A: Physical: hitting my first double under. I worked so hard. I still have to work hard to string them together. Attitude: The other day I was congratulated for rolling my eyes instead of back talking one of the coaches (Coach Hollie). It’s all about baby steps and being a work in progress.
Q: What do you enjoy most about CrossFit Paladin?
A: The coaches and other members bring so much energy and happiness to a workout. I generally get very excited to attend class so I can joke around and hang out with my ‘frans’. I’ve heard rumors about injuries with CrossFit, and although we can’t say that never happens at Paladin because things just happen, our coaches care and want to see you reach your max possibility, but ONLY with correct form. Each day, about 20 minutes is spent going over the movements and warming up while increasing weight until you reach a point that is comfortable for you. Many times the weight has been fine for me, but my form was off. So, my instructions were to ditch some of the weight and focus on nailing the movement. When I did have an injury (not CrossFit related), each coach worked with me to figure out a substitute for the WOD. The coaches and owners are truly some of the best people!
Q: Favorite CrossFit Movement:
Q: Least favorite CrossFit movement:
A: Tied for thrusters and burpees
Q: What is going to be your next bright spot?
A: This past month I’ve been working on hitting below parallel with squatting. In the past I’ve been hitting heavy weights but not completing the movement because I haven’t been squatting low enough. Using a wallball for squat depth measurement has tremendously helped. I’m getting so close from weaning myself away from the wb!
Q: What is your favorite meal after a hard workout?
A: An ice cold water followed by an ice cold beer
Q: Tell us about your family:
A: I have a cute little Heinz 57 dog named Birdie Sue, a whole bunch of cows, couple handfuls of donkeys, and am currently fostering two baby cottontails.
Q: What kind of job do you have?
A: I am a crop insurance agent by day, a pasture to plate beef seller by night, and part time employee with a full time schedule for my family’s ranch by the other part of the night.
Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: During the weekends you can find me outside working alongside family either in the pastures, barns, or traveling in a pickup.
Q: Is there anything else you would like for us to know about you?
A: I can polish off a big jar of pickles in about 3 days – juice included. CrossFit Paladin has brought me loads of self achievement and happiness. I encourage you to give it a try!
Keely has been with us for quite some time, and we love every minute of it. She’s also my go-to for anything cow related- like when a cow got out of it’s pasture and I found it walking along the road by the gym, she was my first call!
